Generally bound by SH 249 (N), TC Jester Blvd (E), Pinemont Dr (S), and Hollister Rd (W).

Created in 2001 by the state Texas Legislature to address concerns about public safety and economic decline by promoting and coordinating the economic growth, cultural activities, and the public welfare of property within its boundaries.

Programs include public safety, branding, graffiti and litter abatement, economic development, and public infrastructure.

Construct new/replace nearly 1.5 miles of sidewalk between Hollister Road and Chateau Forest Drive.

Support extended METRO bus service

Provide connection to White Oak Bayou Trail at Hollister Basin

Project Scope:

The proposed improvements at the intersection of W Tidwell Road and Bingle Road will reconstruct outdated sidewalks, enhance ADA access, upgrade METRO bus stops to accommodate a future BOOST route, and add pedestrian refuge islands and crosswalks.

Purpose:

The project aims to address safety concerns by reducing fatalities and serious injuries. Key reasons include:

W Tidwell Road, west of the intersection, is part of the City of Houston’s High Injury Network, which accounts for 58% of traffic deaths and serious injuries involving vulnerable populations

Seven crashes were reported from 2018 to 2020, according to TxDOT’s Crash Records Information System (CRIS)

Outdated and narrow pedestrian facility with non-compliant ADA ramps, limiting accessibility

Faded pavement markings contributing to a high crash occurrence at the intersection

Project Benefits:

The project will reduce pedestrian exposure to multi-lane vehicular traffic, enhancing protection for vulnerable road users

High-visibility crosswalks, ADA-compliant ramps, and pedestrian refuge islands will create safer and more inclusive streets for all users, regardless of ability

Restriped pavement markings will help vehicles navigate the high-traffic intersection more efficiently, reducing confusion and improving traffic flow

By clearly defining spaces for pedestrians and vehicles, the project will decrease potential conflict points, benefiting all road users

NNMD Programs

Graffiti Abatement Program

The Near Northwest Management District Graffiti Abatement program is designed to remove unwanted graffiti markings to improve the appearance and security of the District’s commercial and apartment properties.

Litter Abatement Program

The District instituted a contract litter abatement program with regular routes along our commercial corridors. With cleaner streets and sidewalks, the “pounds per mile” has decreased – a sure sign of increased pride in our area.

Community safety is the driving force at Near Northwest Management District. NNMD has installed surveillance cameras to monitor activities on and around public spaces. This program provides additional resources to our law enforcement and has been instrumental in many investigations around the District.
